Dear Parents,
We are making a class book about what the students want to be when they grow up! Every student will have a page with their writing and picture in the book! We are going to have the book published by a publishing company! Attached is a permission slip and order form. You do not need to order the book but I do need the permission slip back ASAP in order to include your students writing in our class book. I need the permission slips and order forms returned by next Friday, May 6. My class last year did a book like this and it turned out really well and is a nice keepsake to look back on.
Thanks,
Ms. Dodson

Reminder:
We are going to the theater! We will be visiting Carolina Theatre on April 21st (Thursday) to see The Little Red Hen. We ask that students dress to impress on this day! This just means to dress a little nicer than normal. We will be at the theater from 10:30 – 1:00. Due to this being over our lunch time, we are asking that you send a morning snack for your child to eat before we leave. We will be eating lunch when we return to school. Students who buy lunch everyday will be able to receive a lunch from the cafeteria. If your child does not buy lunch every day, please be sure to pack a lunch!
Thank you!

Dear Owl Families,
Our class was rude and disrespectful in Specials today. Our Special today was Science. The Science teacher, Ms. Starrett, said that out class could not stay in their seats, would not follow direction, talked over the teacher, and were being unsafe with the science materials. We discussed having a good Special before the students left my classroom. As previously stated, being disrespectful in Specials the whole class goes home on red.

We sent home a permission slip for our field trip to the Durham Life and Science Museum last Thursday. This field trip is on May 11. The cost of the trip is $13. For this field trip we could use as many chaperones as possible! The more chaperones the smaller the groups are and the field trip is more fun for the students. The chaperone cost is $8. You need to be a registered volunteer through the school to be a chaperone. You can find out more about becoming a registered volunteer by calling the main office.

Dear Owl Families,
The whole class was sent home on red today. Our class was very disrespectful in our Special, Readers Theater. I received the following email from the Readers Theater teacher:
Ms. Dodson,
Your class was out of control today. So much so that they came down the hallway loud. They were not listening to your TA. Many kids had to use the bathroom during specials. And when they did, they did not know how line up in a straight line. They didn't raise their hands before speaking and when they did they spoke without me asking them to. I had them come and put their heads down. They still could not be quiet. I hope they are better for you. They wasted so much time because they couldn't listen.
Heather MacGrogan
We have had a bad Specials once before and I had told the class that if we ever got a report like that again the whole class would go home on red. I am following through with my consequence. I spoke to the whole class again today about respecting other teachers and our TA, Ms. Baydsen. I walked the class back to Specials and had each student apologize to Mrs. MacGrogan.
Thanks for all your support,
Ms. Dodson

Owl Families,
Our class has been excessively chatty lately! I can barely get a word in edge wise to teach or help individual students. I have tried incentives of extra recess, strikers for their folders, free centers, etc. but it has not been working. I have also tried correction of moving students’ owls on the chart, moving individual seats, taking away extra free time I had been giving them at the end of the day, and silent snacks. I understand that it is Kindergarten and they enjoy talking with their friends but it is now to the point that it is interrupting learning. I am going to now write the word NOISE on the board and if all the letters get erased the whole class will be going home on red until we learn the appropriate times to talk to our friends. I am asking if you would please talk to your students about this also. We are going to try focusing on this in the next few weeks. Please know that your student might be coming home on red for the next few days until our class learns to listen and be quiet when appropriate. I could really use your support while we work on this.
Thanks,

Below is a link to a signup genius for parent/teacher conferences. Wake County likes teachers to meet with their students parents twice a school year to discuss student progress and any concerns by either party. All conferences will be held in my classroom, room 216. Please sign up for a date and time that works best for you. All conference dates will be held in April. If none of the dates work please contact me so we can schedule a time that works for the both of us. I sent home a parent concern paper in the folder on Monday. If you could please fill this out and send it back in by Thursday, March 24. These will help lead our discussion.

Dear Owl Families,
In celebration of Valentine’s Day, our class will be passing out valentines on Friday, February 12th. Drawing from past experiences, we will not be sending home class lists. By not marking who will be receiving the Valentine, students can pass out materials much quicker and without teacher assistance. Please mark only who the Valentine is from. We currently have 23 students in our class, 12 girls and 11 boys. Due to the significant amount of food allergies at our school, any candy sent in will be sent home for parent approval. If you would like to send in something with the card, feel free to send in a pencil, eraser, sweet treat, etc. This is completely optional, but we will recognize this holiday by passing out cards and having a small celebration before Early Release at 1:15.
Thanks,

We sent track-out homework home yesterday in the students backpacks. Homework over track-out is optional but highly encouraged. I sent home a Ziploc bag with 4 different workbooks that the students can work on at their own pace. These workbooks include a handwriting workbook, a math workbook, and 2 reading workbooks. These workbooks practice skills that we have either learned or are going to learn in class. In the bag was a list of sight words that the students should be practicing. The students need to be able to identify these sight words in a snap. Also in the bag are your students Raz-Kids login information and a letterland workbook. Students can practice becoming a better writer by drawing pictures and writing sentences to go with it. When writing they should be a smartie speller by sounding out the words and writing the sounds that they hear.
Have a great track-out!

They did a few different experiments with us to help us understand properties. We looked at rock crystals, talked about different objects that sink or float, did a scavenger hunt to find objects thats properties were described on a card, made a crystal rainbow test tube, and watch them set off a volcano. We had a blast being scientist! |

At the conclusion of the field trip the students will receive a science certificate and the chance to keep the experiments they have made. The cost of this field trip is $8.50 per student. We apologize for the short notice about the field trip, we appreciate your help in making this experience possible.

Dear Owl Parents,
It's time for Holiday Homework! Your child is bringing home a paper turkey today. Please cut out the turkey shape and help your child DISGUISE Tom Turkey as a different animal or character in hopes of avoiding being caught for Thanksgiving Day dinner! Please use any items you find in your home to create your turkey's disguise. Some suggestions for disguising the turkey may be: a sheep, a cat, Superman, a pilgrim or Native American, a ballerina, a football player, a doctor, a nurse, a cheerleader, a farmer or perhaps a favorite character from a book, etc. Your son or daughter will be asked to write about the chosen disguise in school. Please return these turkeys no later than Monday, November 2nd and most importantly have fun!

The Cary Fire Department came to visit today for Fire Safety Month. The students had a blast! They talked about fire safety, what to do in a fire, put on the fire suit, and let the students see/walk through the fire truck!

Dear Owl Families,
We will be having an in-house field trip next week! The organization Science Fun For Everyone will be coming to our school on November 4 for an in-house field trip. They will be setting up in a classroom so we will not have to leave campus. They will provide all equipment and materials for this educational experience. At the conclusion of the field trip the students will receive a science certificate and the chance to keep the experiments they have made. The cost of this field trip is $8.50 per student. We apologize for the short notice about the field trip, we appreciate your help in making this experience possible.
Thanks,
Ms. Dodson

On Wednesday, October 21 we will have our field trip to the pumpkin patch! For this field trip we will not be getting back to school until after 1. I am asking for parents to donate snacks for this trip because it is a long time for our Kindergartners to go without eating. If you can donate a snack or juice boxes it would be greatly appreciated! Over the weekend, we are asking your child to collect fall leaves of all different shapes, sizes, and colors. We will be using these leaves in Science as we begin our new Investigating Properties unit, which will include sorting objects, observations, and journal recordings. Please have your child put them in a Ziploc bag and bring it to school on Tuesday, October 20.
Thank you!
